Unpacking Sustainability Tensions: A Case Study of a Swedish Single-Use Paper Products and Packaging Company

Abstract
The following bachelor's thesis investigates the sustainability-related tensions present within the single-use paper products and packaging industry. The addressed research question was structured in consideration of relevant theories, such as the Triple Bottom Line (TBL), Dyllick & Hockerts (2002) sustainability model, stakeholder theory, and paradox management strategy within corporate sustainability practices. Our study identified three main categories of tensions, namely within: (1) sustainable product considerations, (2) regulatory compliance, and (3) stakeholder interactions, followed by implications for tension management strategies. Our findings suggest that the TBL approach to sustainability is relevant within the single-use paper products and packaging industry, highlighting the interrelation between the three dimensions: environmental, social, and economic. Lastly, the importance of company-stakeholder cooperation has been emphasized. (Less)
