Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to provide a deeper understanding of how team dynamics influence team performance, and thus team effectiveness, in an extreme environment.
Methodology: In order to address the research question, a qualitative research study based on interpretive epistemology has been conducted. A discourse analysis is used with the aim to analyze the Formula 1 drivers’ use of language and social effects thereof. In addition, an abductive approach has been applied.
Theoretical perspectives: The literature review creates a framework of teams operating in extreme environments. It specifies through the notions of coordination and cooperation, cohesion and conflict.
Result: Through studying the interactions within the... (More)

Theoretical perspectives: The literature review creates a framework of teams operating in extreme environments. It specifies through the notions of coordination and cooperation, cohesion and conflict.
Result: Through studying the interactions within the Formula 1 teams Mercedes and Red Bull using discourse analysis, our findings indicate that while positive dynamics enhance team performance, intense rivalry can lead to decreased performance and unfavorable outcomes. The environment also seems to have an influence on the team dynamics.
Conclusions: Through discussing our empirical analysis, this study concludes that there are multiple factors affecting team dynamics. The most important factors were the context of the extreme environment and the internal competition that influenced the overall cohesion. (Less)
