Abstract
The role of the school library in Swedish schools has been a subject for debate in recent years. The debate typically focuses on the impact of school libraries on student reading ability and information literacy, as well as the legitimacy of the school librarian as a profession. Additionally, society faces an alarming trend in the form of steadily declining mental health among children and teens since the 1980’s. This calls for measures to be taken, and all professions who work closely with young people must look at how they can contribute to change. This thesis aims to examine the impact that school librarians and their work have on student wellbeing, focusing on students aged 13-18. By using a qualitative approach where school librarians... By using a qualitative approach where school librarians are interviewed on their perspective as professionals, I explore the extent to which they experience their work as impactful on student mental health, as well as which activities and practices, if any, are considered especially important for this purpose. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of school librarians’ work which goes beyond their individual experiences, Tronto’s ethics of care is used as a theoretical framework. This provides an understanding of whether, and how, their work can be interpreted as a caring practice. The results show that school librarians perceive several aspects of their work as beneficial to student wellbeing, both in the short and long term. However, the extent to which they perceive student wellbeing as a given part of their job varies somewhat. In the concluding chapter I argue that work performed by school librarians can indeed be viewed as a caring practice, and ought to be valued as such. (Less)
