- Abstract
- This thesis aims to describe, analyze and evaluate how the local government policies accommodate housing segregation in neighborhoods of Malmö, Sweden. This is done mainly through an analysis of material collected from documents and interviews, to a large extent concerning a recently built area within Malmö: Limhamns Sjöstad. Through a theoretical framework based on neoliberalism and the locally prominent “mixed-use city”-planning ideal, the essay seeks to investigate what motivates the current housing policies in action, as well as evaluate their effectiveness. By coding local plan documents and interview transcripts using the same categories, a thematic analysis is used to look for comparisons, contrasts and discrepancies between the... (More)
- This thesis aims to describe, analyze and evaluate how the local government policies accommodate housing segregation in neighborhoods of Malmö, Sweden. Through a theoretical framework based on neoliberalism and the locally prominent “mixed-use city”-planning ideal, the essay seeks to investigate what motivates the current housing policies in action, as well as evaluate their effectiveness. By coding local plan documents and interview transcripts using the same categories, a thematic analysis is used to look for comparisons, contrasts and discrepancies between the sources of empirical material. Results and conclusions drawn from this thesis include that Malmö’s housing policies are strongly influenced by the idea of a mixed-use city to combat housing segregation, as well as a general will to return to much what influenced the housing policies of mid 20th-century Swedish housing politics and policy, before the influence of the neoliberal city became influential in city and housing planning.¨However, it is deemed that the material gathered was too incomprehensive to effectively draw conclusions on how effective these policies are against housing segregation. Therefore, the effectiveness of the current housing policies in relation to housing segregation remains inconclusive within this particular essay. (Less)
