This thesis seeks to explore how migration appears a choice in the life-course of the
Bangladeshi professionals.
With an ethnographic approach it employs in-depth interviews, life histories and
focus group discussion to build an understanding of the phenomenon from the
narratives of Bangladeshi professionals living in Malmö, Sweden. Life course
approach in research helps to incorporate macro-micro perspective. Appadurai’s
theory on globalization, Gardner and Åkesson’s ethnography on imagining relating
to migration compose a theoretical lens to examine the phenomenon. The analysis
finds that migration decisions of Bangladeshi skilled professionals are influenced
by a complex interplay of individual, professional, and broader socio-economic
factors. It is a strategic response to the systematic challenges they faced in their
embedded life. Their vision of ideal life doesn’t fit into the ‘mega rhetoric of
development’ in Bangladesh. Eventually their migration is a search for better
possibilities of life in an increasingly globalised world. (Less)
