- Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are being widely employed globally to enhance
marine safety services and address challenges within the maritime sector. Nevertheless,
the provision of these services in East Africa, particularly within the Lake Victoria basin, is
deficient and inadequate. Consequently, a study needs to be undertaken to pinpoint certain
domains in marine safety that may be enhanced by deploying AI systems on Lake Victoria.
Bibliometric research was undertaken to track the research literature on AI technologies
employed for maritime safety (AI) by analysing 278 journal papers published from 2012 to

bibliographic analysis on the potential application of AI and other related non-technological
factors that need to be considered along with AI for maritime safety at Lake Victoria. The
results of this study will play a pivotal role in the development of an all-encompassing Lake
Victoria maritime strategy aimed at guaranteeing safety, security, and sustainable
practices within the Lake Victoria Basin. The study results might also be useful in the
implementation of the Zanzibar Blue Economy Policy. (Less)
