- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- Since 2017, students in various high schools in Sweden have had the option to choose Electronic Digital Instrument (EDI) as their primary instrument. This study aims to explore how those students reflect on EDI in relation to their musical identities, practice and education. As research on EDI is in its infancy at the time of writing, this study also reviews related research areas such as music production, the technological development in schools, and other variants of electronical instruments, as well as earlier research on EDI and musical practice. The study was initiated with a pilot survey that informed the main study, which was conducted as semi-structured group interviews. The participants consist of six students from three different... The study was initiated with a pilot survey that informed the main study, which was conducted as semi-structured group interviews. The participants consist of six students from three different high schools and grades, all of whom plays EDI as their primary instrument. The study has shown that students who play EDI have a strong sense of musical identity and expression. The participants are satisfied with their education, although the results indicate that some teachers lack knowledge of digital technology which negatively effects the students learning experience. Furthermore, the study highlights the significant role of informal learning and non-playing practice in the musical development of EDI musicians. (Less)
