Evaluating the impact of an interactive prototype on user engagement and learning in technical product communication
(2025) KOGM21 20251Cognitive Science
- Abstract
- This study investigates the effectiveness of an interactive module compared to an e-brochure designed to market a video analytics technology. The interactive module was developed using the same core content as the e-brochure, allowing for a direct comparison of format effects. The primary focus of the study is to evaluate how the interactive module impacts user engagement across cognitive, behavioral and emotional dimensions, as well as learning outcomes in comparison to the e-brochure. Drawing on Cognitive load, Dual-coding, Learning by doing and Multimedia learning theories, the research explores how interactivity influences engagement. Additionally, the study highlights the role of Self-determination theory in fostering intrinsic... (More)
- This study investigates the effectiveness of an interactive module compared to an e-brochure designed to market a video analytics technology. Drawing on Cognitive load, Dual-coding, Learning by doing and Multimedia learning theories, the research explores how interactivity influences engagement. Additionally, the study highlights the role of Self-determination theory in fostering intrinsic motivation through autonomy and competence in user interactions. Results demonstrated that the interactive format significantly enhanced user engagement. Despite these positive engagement outcomes, learning gains were inconsistent, potentially due to factors such as the Picture superiority effect and the structure of the post-test quiz aimed to assess learning outcomes. Overall, findings emphasize the importance of well-designed interactive features combined with robust evaluation methods to optimize digital learning environments. (Less)
