Research Questions: How do office employees perceive that their productivity and motivation are affected by remote work in comparison to working in the office?
Which work environment-related factors do office employees feel influence their perceived productivity and motivation?
Purpose: The study aims to deepen the understanding of how office employees’ perceived productivity and motivation are affected by the work environment and the option to work remotely. By analysing employees’ experiences, this study seeks to contribute to new knowledge about factors that promote or hinder effective work in different settings.
Methodology: This qualitative study conducted eight semi-structured interviews with respondents; four from an IT-department in a public sector organisation and four accountants from a private audit firm. The study is based on a constructionist ontological perspective and an interpretivist epistemological stance and has applied an abductive approach.
Theoretical perspectives: This study is grounded in a socio-technical perspective on organisational processes and work design, complemented by Herzberg’s two-factor theory and Vroom’s expectancy theory. The focus lies on the interaction between technical and social systems as well as on individual motivation in the work environment based on both structural conditions and subjective expectations.
Result: Motivation is influenced by factors such as a sense of belonging, the degree of control in daily work, and the feeling of personal development.
Conclusions: From a socio-technical standpoint, the findings clarify how the physical work environment interacts with individual needs, tasks, and social contexts and how these interactions shape employees’ choice of workplace. This in turn, can have a critical impact on individual productivity and motivation. (Less)

(Less)
