Abstract
Organisational ideology is present to certain degrees in every workplace. Yet the research field around employee alignment on organisational ideologies is sparse and underdeveloped. Harnessing the power of an organisational ideology – particularly where that ideology leaves room for individual employees to express their spiritual identity in the workplace – has been found to bring many benefits. The process, however, can be complex and tricky to navigate. This thesis looks to contribute to the demystification of organisational alignment, specifically by providing valuable insight into mechanisms of alignment.

The process, however, can be complex and tricky to navigate. This thesis looks to contribute to the demystification of organisational alignment, specifically by providing valuable insight into mechanisms of alignment.
To do so, we investigated the processes and mechanisms for ideological alignment in a North American nonprofit organisation. In particular, we examined employees’ experiences and perspectives on organisational processes to highlight how person-organisation alignment is initiated and maintained. Through a qualitative case study approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with six former employees to analyse the underlying mechanisms that threaten or facilitate connections between the employee and the organisation. The aim of the study is therefore to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding alignment in non-profit organisations. (Less)
