- Abstract
- Northern Sweden is in the middle of a fundamental industrial reinvigoration. The push for climate neutrality has made the region particularly attractive to sustainable alternatives to the fossil fueled industries of the past. The thesis has investigated Boden county, where the company Stegra, formerly known as H2 Green Steel is aiming to build the world's first fossil free steel manufacturing plant and hydrogen production facility. The aim is to conclude if this development can benefit the entire region's resilience. The aim is to conclude if this development can benefit the entire region's resilience. A mixture of process tracing and document analysis were utilised to perceive the development in the region over several years. The transformative resilience theory by Michaela Trippl was the essay's main framework, but was supported by other concepts such as industrial path development, path dependence and peripheralization. The analysis showed many processes, challenges and opportunities that Boden and Stegra faced during its development. The project will probably not alleviate the challenges faced by Boden county and is a risky financial development, both in relation to the environment, socially and economically. In conclusion, the development in Boden is risky, especially since the entire project has put the county in deep debt. Stegra might alleviate some environmental concerns and is a great investment in the larger green transition, but the project might put Boden in a nefarious place with no way out. (Less)
