- Abstract
- Narratives surrounding AI-technology have long been a fixture in news media, ranging from stories rooted in science-fiction, where robots take over the world, to reports on breakthroughs in machine-learning, which help doctors make better medical decisions. These narratives simultaneously highlight present-day shifts in social practices as well as paving the way for future visions of a society shaped by AI-technology. By using deductive coding and a critical discourse analysis, this thesis aims to elucidate how ChatGPT is positioned in news articles from Dagens Nyheter in relation to sociotechnical imaginaries concerning Artifical Intelligence, where AI-technology replaces humans, and Intelligence Amplification, where AI-technology... By using deductive coding and a critical discourse analysis, this thesis aims to elucidate how ChatGPT is positioned in news articles from Dagens Nyheter in relation to sociotechnical imaginaries concerning Artifical Intelligence, where AI-technology replaces humans, and Intelligence Amplification, where AI-technology enhances humans. Grounded in the concept of sociotechnical imaginaries, combined with a focus on how news-media simultaneously reproduces and renegotiates the current and future-oriented state of our society, this thesis highlights the different ways ChatGPT is positioned in relation to AI- or IA-imaginaries. This is done by examining news-articles both through a language-oriented focus on anthropomorphism as well as how language shapes and structures specific discourses surrounding public, diverse views on artificial intelligence. The analysis showed that articles in Dagens Nyheter often frame ChatGPTs technological functions in relation to human attributes by using comparative anthropomorphic language, and that this at times positioned ChatGPT towards AI-imaginaries. Where ChatGPT was positioned more towards IA-imaginaries, perspectives surrounding ethical, pragmatic, human-in-the-loop-use of the AI-technology were prominent, which highlighted ChatGPT as a tool ultimately beholden to human-first consideration. Examples of discursive ambiguity were also present in some articles, were AI-oriented language focused on human-replacement melded together with principles of IA human-enhancement. The thesis concludes by highlighting how reporting in Dagens Nyheter about artificial intelligence as a concept, and ChatGPT as a specific AI-technology, is multifaceted and that the role ChatGPT will play in our society is still subject to public negotiation.
