Abstract
This study aims to investigate the role of relationship building in social work and the strategies social workers use to create and maintain positive and sustainable relationships with clients. The study is based on an abductive approach and applies a qualitative methodology. Empirical data were collected through two focus groups and three semi-structured interviews with professional social workers working within Swedish social services. The material was analyzed using thematic analysis and interpreted through Felix Bieste’s Theory of the seven principles of casework relationships. This study aims to investigate the role of relationship building in social work and the strategies social workers use to create and maintain positive and sustainable relationships with clients. The participants emphasized that mirroring and active listening are essential for the relationship. As well as that, a working alliance with the client is built on trust, empathy, and honesty. The findings also indicate that social workers adapt their conversational strategies depending on the client's needs and situation, rather than relying on strictly standardized The study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of client relationships in Swedish social work practice and the relational strategies social workers use in their everyday practice interactions with clients.
