Posture and Comfort Analysis of Car Drivers

Lars, Hanson and Akselsson, Roland LU (1998) Nordic Ergonomics Society Annual Conference 1998 p.200-203
Abstract
In the EC project, ANNIE (Application of Neural Networks to Integrated Ergonomics) the aim is to develop a human simulation and ergonomic evaluation tool based on a neural network. Recorded movement patterns from subjects, performing tasks in real environments, will train the network. The net will control a mannequin, to perform human-like movements. The human model will be placed in different virtual working environments and be ordered to perform a task. Injury risk and comfort will be estimated. The ANNIE tool is meant to be a cheap, simple and fast ergonomic evaluation method which will be used by designers in an early stage of the design process. The ANNIE tool is meant to be a cheap, simple and fast ergonomic evaluation method which will be used by designers in an early stage of the design process. In the project, ANNIE will be developed for three different environments. One of them is the car driver environment.

In the ANNIE project a car driving experiment has been performed in the department of Ergonomics and Aerosol Technology in Lund by partners in the EC project. A goal for the experiment was to evaluate the feasibility of some methods recording ergonomic data from humans for use in ANNIE. Some results have been presented by Hanson, L. et al (1998a, 1998b). Another goal was to sample some training data for development of neural nets for ANNIE.

This paper will include a report from an ongoing literature review on comfort applied to car drivers. Also the most interesting results concerning movements and postures are reviewed from the Lund Car driving experiment (Hanson, L. et al, 1998 a and 1998b). (Less)
