God in the Fourth Gospel : A Hermeneutical Investigation of the History of Interpretations

Abstract

This book presents an exhaustive and systematic investigation of six representatives of three important periods of New Testament interpretation: Martin Luther, John Calvin, Brooke Foss Westcott, Heinrich Julius Holtzmann, Rudolf Bultmann and Raymond E. Brown. They serve as dialogue partners in an investigation of the notion of God in the Fourth Gospel, a topic that has been called “the neglected factor in New Testament theology”. The six interpreters’ commentaries on the Fourth Gospel are read attentively and then used in a comparative dialogue with modern exegesis. Their results, methods, and presuppositions are investigated, and the outcome shows a great diversity even between interpreters who lived and worked in the same period. The investigation also shows that there are significant similarities through the centuries, especially as regards a genuinely theological subject such as the notion of God. The positions on questions that are still debated had their representatives already in the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. The notion of God in the Fourth Gospel that emerges through this investigation is a multifaceted notion where love is only one ingredient; God is both hidden and revealed, and God is both the source of life and detached from the “natural” life of the kosmos. But there are also two cardinal thoughts in the Fourth Gospel: that God reveals himself pre-eminently both as and in the persecuted and dying human being Jesus, and that God is intimately close and caring for those whom he has drawn to himself. The Fourth Gospel is one of the important factors behind the shaping of the Christian church and Western society. This book draws attention to one of the principal roots of the Christian notion of God.

Bibeln, och framför allt Nya Testamentet, har präglat det västerländska tänkandet i en utsträckning som inte alltid noteras i nyare historieskrivning. En ledande roll har spelats av de uppfattningar av Gud som förmedlas av de fyra evangelierna. Inte minst har läsningar av Johannesevangeliet genomsyrat de kristna tänkarnas försök att formulera synen på Guds väsen, egenskaper och handlande. Denna avhandling fäster uppmärksamheten vid denna grundläggande text för den kristna uppfattningen om Gud. Inom den nytestamentliga forskningen har de olika nytestamentliga böckernas gudsuppfattning länge varit ett eftersatt område och Johannesevangeliets gudsuppfattning har sedan 1970-talets början vid upprepade tillfällen kallats ”den försummade faktorn inom den nytestamentliga teologin”. I denna avhandling presenteras en systematisk undersökning av hur sex betydande utläggare från tre viktiga epoker har tolkat gudsuppfattningen i Johannesevangeliet. 1500-talet representeras av de sinsemellan så olika reformatorerna Martin Luther och Jean Calvin. Den historiskt arbetande 1800-talsexegetiken företräds av den konservative anglikanen Brooke Foss Westcott och av den tyske liberalteologen Heinrich Julius Holtzmann. För 1900-talsexegetiken står den religionshistoriskt arbetande existentialteologen Rudolf Bultmann och den kanske främste representanten för den nya katolska exegetiken, Raymond E. Brown. Dessa tjänar som samtalspartners i undersökningen av gudsuppfattningen i Johannesevangeliet. Deras resultat, metoder och förutsättningar undersöks och resultatet visar en stor variation även mellan utläggare som levde och verkade i samma tid. Undersökningen visar också att det finns viktiga likheter genom århundradena, särskilt beträffande ett så utpräglat teologiskt ämne som gudsuppfattningen. Olika ställningstaganden i frågor som fortfarande debatteras hade sina representanter redan under 1500-talet och 1800-talet. Den uppfattning av Gud i Johannesevangeliet som framträder genom undersökningen är mångfacetterad och Guds kärlek är bara en av dess beståndsdelar. Gud är både fördold och uppenbarad och Gud är både livets källa och skild från det ”naturliga” liv som hör till det som Johannesevangeliet kallar ”världen”. Men där finns också två grundtankar: att Gud uppenbarar sig framför allt genom och i den ansatte och döende människan Jesus, och att Gud är innerligt nära och vårdar sig om dem han har dragit till sig.
