Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to study the function of the cathedral as a devotional milieu and try to recreate lay people´s visits using the keywords Places, Times, Objects and Motifs. Geographically the study is limited to two cathedrals in present-day Sweden: the ones in Linköping and Lund. In this way, cathedrals from two different ecclesiastical provinces (the archbishoprics of Uppsala and Lund) are represented. The temporal limitation is the Late Middle Ages, i.e. the period from c. 1400 to the Reformation. The late medieval interiors of the cathedrals are reconstructed, as far as possible, and related to the movements and devotions of the laity. Further the theological meaning of the devotions are set out and analysed in order to... (More)

Further the theological meaning of the devotions are set out and analysed in order to provide a more complete picture of lay spirituality. The source material comprises mostly late medieval letters of indulgence.

Medieval cathedrals have suffered both small and large alterations from the Reformation onward and the most prominent difference between then and now is perhaps that the late medieval interiors were divided into smaller units, by arrangements that were either provisional (screens, drapes, lattices) or permanent (rood screen, chapels). By this means, a number of separate devotional spaces were created, where the majority seem to have been at least partly accessible to the laity.

The late medieval visitor was exposed to a multitude of visual impressions, and apart from obvious points of orientation such as, for instance, the rood and the nave altar, it seems very likely that indulgence privileges to some extent have determined which places in the cathedral that were primarily singled out for visits. These letters can therefore be supposed to have guided the experiences and movements of the late medieval visitor to a cathedral. (Less)

Popular Abstract in Swedish

(Less)
