Proton Induced X-rays and Gamma Rays for the Analysis of Welding Fumes

Malmqvist, Klas LU ; Johansson, Gerd LU and Akselsson, Roland LU (1978) The American Industrial Hygiene Conference
Abstract
Welding aerosols have been sampled in different size fractions using a moving stage cascade impactor. Sampling has been done for different welding methods and for varying welding parameters. The elemental composition of the different size fractions have been determined by Proton Induced X-ray Emission, PIXE, combined with a nuclear method for fluorine analysis.

Results show maximum mass of most elements to be on particles with an aerodynamic diameter in the range of 0.25-1µm.

Varying the welding parameter will affect distribution and chemical composition of the aerosols as well as the fume formation rate.
