Abstract
This study assessed the ability of the tongue tip to accurately select intra-oral sensors embedded in a upper palatal interface of 19 able-bodied volunteers. Tongue selectivity performance measures were determined for three different tongue-computer interface layouts. Assessment of intra-oral target selection speed and accuracy revealed that performance was dependent on the location and distance between the sensors. Anterior and medially located sensors were easier to access with the tongue than posterior and laterally located ones. Evidence for rapid sensory-motor learning of the tongue was shown by a significant improvement in the speed and accuracy over three daily practice sessions of 30 minutes. These results provide key design... (More)

These results provide key design considerations to further increase the efficiency of tongue-computer interfaces for individuals with upper-limb mobility impairments. (Less)
