The present study Valeriu Anania : A Monographic Study represents a first systematised attempt to depict the most relevant aspects of the intellectual Bartolomeu Valeriu Anania’s personality. We shall mainly focus on his position as a writer, but, complementarily, on that of theologian as well. We structured our thesis formally according to the criteria of a monographic study, following, in distinct sections, the polyphonic profile of the intellectual Bartolomeu Valeriu Anania. An Autobiographical Portrait; Poetry; Prose; Dramaturgy; Memoirs, Essay, Publicism, Diary; The Translation of the Holy Bible. We aimed to underline both the completion of the creative spirit of the author in each of the domains it acted, and the echo his writings determined in the public conscience. However, beyond the canonical circumstances of the configuration and receptivity of the writer’s work, we tried to propose an interpretation key, which would emphasize the associating or dissociating manner in which the work relates to the intentionality of the author or to the tradition of the mitem.

The first chapter is dedicated to the recovery of the significant events of a distinct biography, which has undergone not few decisive moments for the development of the creative spirit of the author. Bartolomeu Valeriu Anania’s existential line has met numerous extraordinary hypostases of man, and happened to have important positions and tasks for a long time, which have tested the ontological limit of the individual, every time assumed, interiorised and metamorphosed in compensatory and significant gestures and attitudes of the cultivated spirit. As much as possible, the biographical portrait we have made aims also at the gathering of the author’s confessions, discreetly spread along all his work, upon topics which have been neither stated nor hidden, but acquired with dignity by the man who, since early youth has dedicated his life to serving the Orthodox belief and the Romanian people, with both his given talent and personality.

The second chapter aims to follow the evolution of Valeriu Anania’s poetical creation, by distinctly analysing every of the five volumes of poetry published between 1971 and 1992. The introductory part attempts to identify the circumstances of the configuration of the poetic spirit, by relating to the personality and work of the two writers who represented declaratively an aesthetic reference: Tudor Arghezi and Vasile Voiculescu. We paid special attention to the symbol of light in the poetical works of the author, and the concise conclusion aims at showing the paradoxical role of the language with Valeriu Anania between to make and to create, understood as synonyms by the writer of theological education.

The chapter dedicated to the analysis and interpretation of Valeriu Anania’s prose approaches distinctly the two volumes signed by the author, challenging a hermeneutical interpretation which uses the instruments of contemporary exegesis but maintaining a fundamental relation to the fundamental Christian text or with theology as a whole, in relation to which the writer constructs elaborated and erudite allegories. Finally yet importantly, we suggest the reading of the two volumes as an artistic dimension of certain autobiographical elements in a subtle parable of the writer’s own destiny.

The chapter dedicated to the analysis of Valeriu Anania’s dramaturgy resorts to, as much as possible, the sometimes critical evaluation of the bibliographical sources which the author can be related or related to. Here we have the most documented and structured section of our study, fully motivated by the fact that the writer Valeriu Anania was first acknowledged as playwright, and his plays relies on the artistic valuation of some essential myths of our national culture. Each of the five plays is analysed separately. The conclusion wants to depict the categories of mythical thinking in “the pentalogy of the Romanian myth”.

The chapter Memoirs, Essay, Publicistic Activity, Diary is, as the title itself suggests, the most heterogeneous of the sections of the dissertation. Its heteroclite character is determined by the nature of the analysed material itself. We attempt to present, under a common title, volumes which are not substantially confine with one another, or formally related to one another. The author himself had not intended the four volumes as a unitary work either, as they are late gatherings of his publicist activity. These objective circumstances determine the characteristic expository feature of our approach, as we tried mainly to summarise the contents of the above-mentioned works and to draw characteristics of the intellectual, aesthetic profile of the author. However, we assume subsidiarily the commentary and interpretation of the author’s discourse, especially when his opinions prove a unity if vision with the literary works. Not seldom do the notes in these secondary works offer new information regarding the alchemy and genesis of his literary work, with reference to biographical experiences regrettably meant to be definite past. Without wishing to impose an exclusivist opinion, we believe that the main value, sometimes impossible to tell, of these volumes is that of documents, and thus, this chapter can be seen as a complementarity of the brief biographical portrait at the beginning of our study. Between the lines written for more than sixty years we can figure out the cultural portrait of a personality who cultivated his firm, constant beliefs stoically and with dignity. Paradoxically, it is here that we see a complete Valeriu Anania, perhaps more than anywhere else.

Valeriu Anania’s literary work, laborious and constantly elaborated for half a century, proves to be only a preamble of the masterpiece, the translation of the Bible, a definite accomplishment of his cultural destiny. The work on the artistic word finds its peak in the supreme effort to depict the authentic expression which word gives to the Logos, through this the author tasting the divine spirit ontologically. The self-expression of the author through the artistic word is elevated and metamorphosed in God’s expression, through the holy word, and thus achieving an inner self-elevation. (Less)

(V. Fanache)

Abstract in Romanian

Lucrarea Valeriu Anania.
