Henderson, Carlos LU (2025) In Borealis – An International Journal of Hispanic Linguistics 14(1). p.111-140
Abstract
The article addresses the phenomenon of linguistic change through the increasing use of Anglicisms in contemporary Spanish. It is grounded in the idea that the linguistic meaning of Anglicisms encompasses both ideational and interpersonal elements, as outlined by Halliday (1973). The objective is to analyze the incorporation of following four Anglicisms in the Spanish-speaking world from a diachronic and sociolinguistic perspective: al final del día ‘at the end of the day’, hoja de ruta ‘roadmap’, doméstico ‘domestic’, and paper ‘article’. The main hypothesis posits that these Anglicisms function not only as linguistic tools bearing lexical content but also as markers of identity and social... (More)

The main hypothesis posits that these Anglicisms function not only as linguistic tools bearing lexical content but also as markers of identity and social differentiation. The data are drawn from the diachronic corpora of the Royal Spanish Academy (CORDE, CREA, CORPES XXI), enabling an analysis of the evolution of these terms across diverse geographic and temporal contexts. The results reveal that the studied Anglicisms create conflicts by competing with existing native material and requiring greater cognitive effort. Furthermore, their adoption is linked to specific contexts, such as political, academic, and media discourse, where they serve to reinforce identity, group affiliation, and social prestige. The entrenchment of these terms is more pronounced in contexts that promote discursive persuasion, such as politics or science (Less)

(Less)
