Towards a new model of group development

Jern, Stefan LU (2004) The XVIII International Congress of Psychology p.227-227
Abstract
Background: Current models of group development favor views assuming that groups move from relative irrationality and inefficiency to rationality and efficiency in defined sequential stages.

Aims: To present (a) a project questioning the generality of the linear progressive models of group development, (b) an alternative model taking into account factors related to formation, time, boundary management and contextual influence.

Methods: Studies of natural groups by group diaries analyzed by narrative methods.

Results: The chosen factors are relevant for the study of developmental patterns. The resulting model may explain diverging results in previous research.

Results: The chosen factors are relevant for the study of developmental patterns. The resulting model may explain diverging results in previous research.

Conclusions: For project groups no model is generally valid. Developmental patterns depend to a high degree on contextual factors that are mediated by crucial events during formation and later. (Less)
