The purpose of this study was to examine the mental ill-health among young people, what might cause it and if there is any differences between the sexes. This has been studied through an analysis of how professional social workers, that work with young people, look at the prob-lem of suicide among adolescents, self harm and what the professionals are doing to handle this. We have conducted a qualitative study with six semi-structured interviews. In this study we have used individualization theory in order to analyze our material. Some of our conclu-sions were that the increasing individualization of society and lack of adult presence in the lives of young people can contribute to mental ill-health. It was also found in the study that in all arenas there were differences between the sexes.
Key words: mental ill-health, adolescent, suicide, self-harm, individualization. (Less)
