Abstract
As one of the main objectives of the Bologna process, employability has become a central concept to consider for universities when designing higher education. Although the universities are required implementing employability, there is no defined meaning of what employability actually is which implies a significant autonomy for university teachers in how to interpret the concept and fill it with meaning. By discourse analysis and implementation theory, this thesis aims to further explore what is made out of a vague concept like employability at the Department of Political Science at Lund University. Since studying political science is not strictly aimed at certain professions the students face a multifaceted labour market, why implementing an already vague concept could be even more complex for university teachers.
The thesis concludes that employability is interpreted as generic skills, transmittable between different contexts and thus of more use in a multifaceted labour market. Preparing students for the labour market is nothing new; however a change can be seen since the Bologna process indicating further focus on this matter. An important part of the employability work is trying to elucidate measures already taken rather than new initiatives, as students do not always see what tools they get. (Less)
