Abstract
In almost every armed conflict throughout the history there has been incidents of rape and sexual violence to various degrees. This has rarely been taken to account in peace negotioations and agreements. This thesis aims to describe and evaluate the ideas about sexual violence and womens participation in peace agreements, that are represented by the UN security council in the resolutions on women, peace and security. Through an analysis of the ideas concerning these matters and a theory about how to take a gender perspective into mainstream politics the thesis analyses the most important aspects of gender mainstreaming and what the critique that feminist scholars bring has to say about gender mainstraming in the international security... This has rarely been taken to account in peace negotioations and agreements. This thesis aims to describe and evaluate the ideas about sexual violence and womens participation in peace agreements, that are represented by the UN security council in the resolutions on women, peace and security. Through an analysis of the ideas concerning these matters and a theory about how to take a gender perspective into mainstream politics the thesis analyses the most important aspects of gender mainstreaming and what the critique that feminist scholars bring has to say about gender mainstraming in the international security area. The conclusion includes a discussion about the risk of treating women as objects that are supposed to be protected. It also describes the weakness in working with gender issues in policy area, while it often is a problem that the measures of gender mainstreaming only make a retorical change to the policys. (Less)
