- Abstract
- After the first known honor killing of Sara in 1996, in Sweden, a discussion started about the concept of honor which in turn opened the doors for some other discussions. I have been using Faircloug’s critical discourse analysis as a method for researches into how the discourse concerning honor are termed and how “we/they “, “Swedes” and “immigrants”, are constructed through the discussions of the different concepts of honor. I have also examined the ways in which there is a difference between honor and gender oppression in relation to culture and religion and how young Swedish women of foreign origin are presented as victims. In the result, I concluded that there is a notion of honor oppression as something culturally and as part of “the others”, “immigrants”. Sweden is considered a land of equality, free from patriarchy while “immigrants” are considered a homogenous group living in a culture of honor. A “we/they” thinking is re-created in the discourses when Swedish violence and non Swedish violence gets separated. (Less)
