When grief finds new ways - a qualitative study about grief blogs

The purpose of this study was to examine why people who suffer from grief chooses to share their experiences through blogs on the Internet. Furthermore and by studying the blogs we intended to gain understanding of the advantages and disadvantages that blogging can bring to the bloggers. The study is based on a qualitative analysis of the content from eight different blogs and was conducted by analyzing a substantive number of blogs and readers' comments.
To help interpret our material we have used Cullberg’s theory of crisis in order to
better understand the process of grief. We also used Karlsson’s och Svedberg’s theories of groupbelongings and Goffman’s dramaturgical model to better understand our material. By doing this we discovered that blogging about a topic of this complexity was of great interest to a large variety of other people. The study also shows that all bloggers receive a massive response from readers as they often comment on various items posted on the respective blogs. The main conclusion of the study is that the deliberate choice to blogg about personal grief can be traced to a greater need to talk about feelings of grief than the bloggers think their social context can handle. The result also points to that those who blog about grief receive massive support by the readers, but that it can also lead to a certain emotional dependency and a risk to be held back in their grieving-process by having to maintain their role as griever in the blog-community. So, whereas this support can lead to a strong emotionally liberated community among readers and bloggers, there are both positive and negative consequences for the individuals behind the grief blogs.
