- The purpose of this essay is to examine different factors that affect women in horticulture. The horticultural sector is seen as a great opportunity for poverty reduction, especially for women. Nevertheless, there are several obstacles that are analysed in this study in order to examine the actual possibilities for women in Kenyan horticulture. Through using qualitative and quantitative methods in a field study, sector specific obstacles faced by females have been studied to enable an analysis of the risk faced by women in horticulture. The higher the risk that women experience, the less incentive there is for them to enter and invest in the horticultural sector. However, women can still take advantage of the possibilities offered by the sector due to the risk reducing factors which function as informal insurances. (Less)
