- There is a limited amount of research regarding the use of information systems (IS) augmenting organizations ecological sustainable initiatives. While the field of Green IT somewhat has been studied, Green IS has not received the same attention in scientific research. In this report we have aimed to identify areas that are poorly, or have yet to be, augmented by IS. Thus highlighting areas where organizations could further improve their practice. Using current Green IS literature we have constructed a research framework handling approaches of IS, ecological sustainability and institutional theory. This research framework was used as guidance when conducting eight interviews within Sweden, four interviews with large municipal organizations, three with large non-municipal organizations, as well as one interview with an expert in sustainable practice. We found that Green IS was mostly present in systems for creating automated efficiency. There were also signs of Green IS used to communicate data on ecological sustainability both internally and externally, but a lack of systems using the data for decision support and to changing people’s behavior. There were little to no signs of Green IS directly aiming to transform organizations ecologically sustainable conduct. We have identified and discussed all the areas of Green IS handled in our research framework. (Less)
