Självbestämmande genom kommunikation : en studie av kommunikationens plats inom några av LSS verksamheter

- Abstract
- Verbal forms of communication seem to still be that dominant that other forms of expression are far from obvious to use. This study is based on interviews with ten caregivers whose work is governed by the Law on Support and Service for People with Certain Functional Impairments (LSS). In their daily work at group homes or in day service, they meet people
with intellectual disabilities who mainly rely on non-verbal forms of expression. The study explores to what extent the caregivers can be said to use communication as a mean to strengthen the users’ self-determination. Even though there are great differences in how the

In their daily work at group homes or in day service, they meet people

caregivers make use of communication in their work, they all have their own strategies in understanding and interacting in non-verbal ways. And the users’ own choice can often be realized through this interaction. Though non-verbal forms of expressions still need the recognition as meaningful communication, and the work in developing communication with
the users also need to be prioritized. This study further suggests that caregivers should take advantage of the knowledge of people with different experiences (members of the users’ family, speech therapists, psychiatrists etc.) when interpreting the user’s expressions as well
as in complex dilemmas of decision-making. (Less)
