Abstract (Swedish)
This study discusses the image of Sweden and Swedish society in Swedish-language instructional material used in the Swedish-language course for immigrants (S.F.I.). As such, the main source material for this study has been different textbooks used as instructional material in the S.F.I. course from 1967-2005. Theoretically, this study takes its inspiration from the branch of discourse analysis known as Critical Discourse Analysis and is structured on social constructivist theory. Here, the main idea is to examine the sources as creations of their time that, as such, change with time and new discourse, but reproduce norms and values of the time. Here, the main idea is to examine the sources as creations of their time that, as such, change with time and new discourse, but reproduce norms and values of the time. Specifically the representations of labor, gender, and history present in the material have been examined. The general results of the study have found an invariable colonial type discourse present in much the material. In the shift away from the overt assimilation discourse in Sweden, around the middle of the 1970’s, a significant shift in the S.F.I. instructional material occurs. This shift is the reflection of the new municipal coordinator of the course as well as the shifting pattern of immigration. Generally, the shift in the material is towards a nationalist presence in the form of equality-nationalist as well as welfare-nationalist discourses. (Less)
