- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay is to examine how bereavement groups in the Church of Sweden work in practice. I have familiarized myself with terms like grief, grief process and grief recovery, to find out what grief is. Grief can be described as a normal response to a loss of any kind. Grief is the pain and suffering which we can experience after a loss. In this phase, a bereavement group can be helpful, where the bereaved may associate with other mourners in a self–help group.

My research focuses on parishes in the diocese of Växjö. I investigate whether the parishes have a specific model for the meetings of their bereavement groups. Which topics are covered? Who is the leader - a deacon, a priest, or both? How does the process of selecting participants work? To examine this, I sent out 34 questionnaires to different parishes in Växjö diocese, some located in the countryside, some in the towns. I received responses from 25 of them. All the responses are included in my study.
Bereavement groups in the parishes seem to be valuable work. The group consists of 4-6 participants. A model for the meetings has been designed in order to meet the needs of participants and topics covered have been carefully selected. These may include conversations about death, the funeral, grief reactions, and how to live on – alone. Often the groups meet 6-8 times during the spring or fall semester. Most often groups are lead by a deacon and a priest.
To have expressed their grief and experiences in words in a small group will help the bereaved to move forward in their bereavement process. Living with grief is difficult, but the fellowship of a bereavement group can help both to express grief and to find ways to live with it. (Less)
