Abstract
In this report the relationship between the stiffness of the bracing structure and the critical
load is investigated. The investigation is concentrated to wooden beams over one span
exposed to a point load in the middle of the span, according to Figure 1a. The analysis is
based on literature, finite element modeling and laboratory experiments
When the lateral bracing is placed on the same level, or higher up in the cross section, a
relationship between bracing stiffness and critical load according to Figure 1b is obtained.
When a low bracing stiffness is used the beam will buckle at the braced point. If a higher
bracing stiffness is used lateral displacements will be prevented in the bracing point. The

The
stiffness necessary to prevent lateral displacements is the ideal bracing stiffness, kideal. An
increase in the bracing stiffness above the ideal stiffness won’t result in a higher critical
load. From the results of the finite element modeling an analytical relationship for
determining the ideal bracing stiffness is established. (Less)
