Abstract
In the study, three unannounced evacuation experiments have been carried out in a cinema theatre. The evacuation experiments have been used to create a specific scenario and nine Swedish fire safety consultants have then been given an assignment to accomplish an evacuation simulation of the specific scenario. The study has shown that there are variations in the choice of input data for the evacuation simulations between different fire safety consultants. Besides differences in the selection of specific parameters (for example walking speed), there is also variation in assumption of how this value varies from the mean value. The result from the evacuation simulations showed that the variation in result is large between different fire safety... (More)
In the study, three unannounced evacuation experiments have been carried out in a cinema theatre. The result from the evacuation simulations showed that the variation in result is large between different fire safety consultants, both for different data points in the cinema theatre and for the total evacuation time. A general conclusion for all scenarios is that the evacuation started later in almost all evacuation simulations than the performed evacuation experiments. Since there is a large variation in results between different evacuation simulations, the results from evacuation experiments is not considered to be comparable with the evacuation simulations in general. However, in some cases the correlation between experiments and simulations are good, especially if only the total evacuation time is considered. In order to reduce the variations in input data and hopefully also the variation in results, one suggestion could be to develop accepted reference values and distributions for different parameters. As all possible scenarios cannot be covered with reference values, it is also important that users are provided with knowledge of reasonable values. (Less)
