In the recent decades, one of the most phenomenal changes in many universities in Western countries is the dramatically increase of students from China. Subsequently, the thesis author mentioned that general view concerning educational tourism associates educational tourists with the international students’ mobility. This has emerged as an important part of the university students’tourism market. Furthermore, Finland has recently risen as one of the selected destinations for international higher education. The author's research presents and illustrates how most Chinese students travelling to Finland tend to be motivated by not only a desire for education, but also to explore tourism opportunities in accordance with their choices and preferences during leisure time. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to offer a better insight in the educational tourist's leisure travel experience by investigating the tourists' motivation and behavior.
In this thesis, the author used a qualitative research approach together with the form of focus groups and semi-structured interviews. In order to thoroughly investigate the research questions, the data was collected by means of focus groups interviews. The results afford opportunity for a pertinent comprehension of research issues by using of interviewees' perspectives closely involved with the research topic. The research findings help to achieve the study purpose and enrich the knowledge by identifying Chinese educational tourists' consumer choices in Finland. In the end, the recommendations and suggestions present the current Chinese educational tourists preferences towards tourism opportunities in Finland. This fact might be of interest for Finnish tourism players in order to further understand how Chinese educational tourists think about destination development and product classification. (Less)
