- Recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) is a way of constructing roads with less climate impact. However, the RAP often contain moisture which is known to be disadvantageous for the final product and will at the same time increase the production cost. A manufacturing method that also aims have less impact on the environment is NCC Green Asphalt. The method allows a lower manufacturing temperature than a conventional asphalt mix, which emits less carbon dioxide. The purpose of this study was to show how different moisture content of the RAP affects asphalt mixes if not overheated properly to get rid of the moisture. The investigations were made in a laboratory where the temperature was investigated during and after the mixing process. The density,... (More)

The purpose of this study was to show how different moisture content of the RAP affects asphalt mixes if not overheated properly to get rid of the moisture. The investigations were made in a laboratory where the temperature was investigated during and after the mixing process. The density, the void content and the press tensile strength was also tested. The press tensile strength was evaluated with Trafikverkets programme PMS Objekt. The results shows that an increase of moisture content of the RAP will lower the overall quality of the final product and will lower the manufacturing temperature. It’s therefore important to vaporize all the water when making the Green Asphalt mix due to the low manufacturing temperature that can drop to 100˚C or lower. It is thus of great importance to protecting the RAP from precipitation and provide good drainage possibilities. (Less)
