- An ongoing discussion in Sweden regards the reduced green areas as a consequence of urbanization and housing shortages. Previous research emphasizes positive effects that nature has to our health. Public outdoor environments such as playgrounds or parks are the basis of children's play in their neighborhood. - An ongoing discussion in Sweden regards the reduced green areas as a consequence of urbanization and housing shortages. Previous research emphasizes positive effects that nature has to our health. Public outdoor environments such as playgrounds or parks are the basis of children's play in their neighborhood. To plan and create good environ-ments, for children to grow up in, is therefore necessary. The thesis has two purposes. One is to demonstrate the importance of green outdoor environment by observing how children play in places where natural materials are available. The other purpose is to investigate how places that are stimulating for children's play are managed in Lund municipal planning. In discussing and analyzing the impact of different places on how children play, the theoretical framework is based on concepts outlined by Helen Tovey and Yi-Fu Tuan. The conclusions drawn from the empirical data are that outdoor environments are essential for children’s play, but also that places associated with play contributes to a variety of positive feelings, such as self-confidence and independence. A solution is to implement children's views in the planning process to improve the formation of public environments intended for play. (Less)
