- In recent times, as the construction industry moves towards high-rise structures, under seas tunnels and mega infrastructure projects, companies face hard time managing the construction that continuously evolves for achieving new methods of engineering and supervision. Depending on the size and sensitivity of the project, the owners choose the construction company; i.e. mega projects require mega contractors to do the job. - In recent times, as the construction industry moves towards high-rise structures, under seas tunnels and mega infrastructure projects, companies face hard time managing the construction that continuously evolves for achieving new methods of engineering and supervision. Depending on the size and sensitivity of the project, the owners choose the construction company; i.e. mega projects require mega contractors to do the job. As such, a companies’ success is derived from the precise and well-structured managements that handle thousands of employees, machinery, and materials. Some state that centralisation of process is a better way to manage, where every division will be under the direct supervision of the managements. Others agree, but add a concern on how to manage when constructing complex and huge projects or when operating in different counties.
By the means of real-time examples and problems; as a first-hand experience, the researcher constructed this qualitative based paper through a case study conducted in a construction firm at the planning and monitoring department. The aim was an attempt to draw a proposal for better performance using the evidence offered and delivering an overview on decentralisation in construction firms with emphasis on construction planning and monitoring. It reflected three (3) main theoretical approaches; drawn from literature, the researcher focused on. First approach is introducing the methods of construction planning. The second is how construction firms plan and monitor progress in projects and the third approach is discussing how decentralisation affects positively the iteration process of planning and monitoring. After relating the theory to the findings of the study, the article concludes and proposes a new organisational structure based on decentralised divisions in order to advance and boost the productivity and efficiency of the planning and monitoring division.
