Abstract
Curitiba is the capital of the state of Paraná, in the south of Brazil. One of the main environmental issues Curitiba faces today is related to flooding and cloudburst events. They are caused not only due to climate change but also due to the piping of many rivers, the pollution on the water systems and the irregular settlements around the floodplains.

The rivers that were once part of the culture and daily life of people are not really part of Curitiba today. They were the birthplace and the ground zero of the city, but today they are hidden under streets and infrastructure or treated as sewage. Working with the rivers could bring not only environmental benefits but also social ones, where the river is given back to all citizens.

Therefore, this thesis project works on two key layers: the environmental one - dealing with flooding, and the social one - creating a gathering space which allows new connections between nature and people, as well as the recovery of the history and identity of the river. After an introductory context to the city and the current situation, the project is then developed in three scales: the basin, the flooding responsive system – in a specific area of the basin - and finally, the detailed design.
