Abstract
This essay aims to examine the relationship between ageing populations and political development. Former studies have shown a strong correlation between the change of individual values and life progression but have yet to determine whether or not this can be applied on a structural scale. By applying Schwartz value theory on the parties in the Swedish parliament, each party was a assigned an index indicating their underlying values and motivation in relation to four fundamental values. This was then compared to how they performed in the 2018 national Swedish election in 15 municipalities of varying size and age structure. The conclusion of that comparison lead to the creation of individual indexes for the 15 municipalities which could then... (More)

By applying Schwartz value theory on the parties in the Swedish parliament, each party was a assigned an index indicating their underlying values and motivation in relation to four fundamental values. This was then compared to how they performed in the 2018 national Swedish election in 15 municipalities of varying size and age structure. The conclusion of that comparison lead to the creation of individual indexes for the 15 municipalities which could then be analysed for any correlation between age structure and election results on the basis of value theory. The study found that no such correlation could be confirmed but that the relation between age structure and political outcome seemed to be random. Further discussions in the last chapter concluded that a reassessment of the method where it was used on a larger scale with more variables as a basis of the indexes could lead to a more conclusive result.
