This study aimed to identify which management and leadership soft skills project managers in project-driven industries are required to have, to contend with complexity and change. To gain a holistic understanding, this knowledge was generated through four different research methods: literature research, interviews with twelve experts across the automotive and IT industries, interviews with five clients in the AEC industry, and surveys of project managers in the architecture, engineering, construction (AEC) industry. The research was able to draw findings about how the different groups perceive the skills and their importance.
Comparing the learnings from these four categories showed which soft skills in regards to leadership and management project managers should possess to mitigate potential future challenges, satisfy clients’ needs, and improve internal collaboration. Overall, communication, planning, transparency, alignment, and adaptability were considered the most important soft skills and the ones most consistently listed and discussed.
The study contributes to the literature by expanding and enriching academic research on what soft skills are required in project-driven industries through the four perspective approach on the topic. This research is also helpful for all project managers who aim to improve themselves and their work through adopting and improving their soft skills. (Less)
