Syfte: Arbetets syfte var att undersöka hur medarbetare upplever deras chefers ledarskap och användning av olika grupper av påverkanstaktiker. Vidare var vi intresserade om detta påverkades eller modulerades något av chefernas egen ålder eller kön. Vidare ville vi även få en fördjupad förståelse hur denna relation mellan medarbetare, chef och påverkanstaktik påverkar medarbetarnas egenupplevda motivation och effektivitet.

Metod: Studien är en kvalitativ fallstudie som är baserat på åtta snöbollsurvalsgenerade semi-strukturerade intervjuer med olika medarbetare på myndigheten SCB (statistiska central byrån). Studien har en socialkonstruktionistisk utgångspunkt med en aktiv tolkningsbaserad och abduktiv arbetsmetodik. Valet av SCB som studieobjekt var delvis för dess unika natur samt på grund av bekvämlighetsargument.

Teoretiska perspektiv: Tidigare forskning om ledarskap samt påverkanstaktiker ligger till grund för denna studie. Vidare har tidigare forskning kring relationerna mellan motivation, effektivitet, kön och ålder samt påverkanstaktiker varit del av den grund denna studie vilar på. Då tidigare forskning främst fokuserat på dessa faktorer ur ett chefsperspektiv var av vissa faktorer nästan obefintligt studerats tidigare ansåg vi detta som en grund i det kunskapsgap vi valt att studera.

Resultat: Våra empiriska material visar på att i medarbetarnas upplevelser fanns en genomgående påverkan på deras motivation och effektivitet i vardagsarbetet på grund av chefens val av påverkanstaktik. Av de tre grupperna av påverkanstaktiker var den rationella främst uppskattad samt motivations och effektivitetshöjande bland medarbetarna. Sedan fanns det delade meningar kring hur man upplevde hårda samt mjuka taktiker men de upplevdes ändå som delvis motiverande och effektivitetshöjande. Sist såg vi även att medarbetarna upplevde en påverkan av både chefens kön och ålder.

Slutsats: Vår studie har vi visat på ett icke generaliserbart kunskapsbidrag där vi ser att det finns en aktualitet att undersöka ålder och kön hos chefer i relation till påverkanstaktiker. Vidare har vi även påvisat att för medarbetarna är taktikerna och taktikval relevant för deras motivation och effektivitet i vardagsarbetet. Ytterligare har vi även bidragit med ökad kunskap kring varför och hur denna påverkan sker samt att det verkar finnas förvånandevis minimal resistens till de olika påverkanstaktiker även de som upplevs som negativa eller kontraproduktiva. Furthermore, we were interested in researching if this was affected or modulated by either the boss’s gender or age. We further wanted to generate a deeper understanding how the relation between follower and boss and in turn influence tactic affected the followers experienced motivation and effectiveness.

Research question: “How do followers experience and get affected by their boss’s influence tactics and how in turn if this experience is affected by the boss’s different attributes.”

Methodology: The study is a qualitative case study based on eight semi structured interviews with different followers/employees at the government bureau for statistical research and analysis: SCB (Statistiska Centralbyrån). The study has a social constructionist viewpoint with an active interpretive based approach and abductive working method. The choice of SCB as our study object was partially due to its unique and distinct nature as well as because of arguments of comfort.

Theoretical perspective: Previous research about leadership and influence tactics generate the basis of this paper. Furthermore, earlier research on motivation, effectivity, gender and age in relation to influence tactics build additionally on this theoretical base. Since earlier theoretical research firmly has focused on these aspects with a leadership perspective if at all, we used this knowledge gap as the directing light in determining the focus of this paper.

Result: Our empirical data showed that the followers experienced continuous effects on the motivation and effectiveness in the daily work due to the boss’s choice of influence tactic. Of the three groups of influence tactics we found that the rational one was the most appreciated and most effective in generating positive effects for the followers. While there were split opinions on how the experience was on both hard and soft influence tactics there two did create an effect on motivation and effectivity, sometimes a positive effect and sometimes a negative. Finally, we even found that followers experience differences and placed importance in both the age and gender of their boss.

Conclusion: Our study has generated a non-generalizable contribution of knowledge where we can observe that there is a further empirical need to analyse the age and gender of boss’s when looking at influence tactics. Furthermore, we have also presented that for the followers the tactics and choice of tactic are important in relation to their personal motivation and effectiveness. We have also additionally contributed with increased knowledge about why this influence occurs and how as well as the fact that there seems to be minimal resistance to the different influence tactics even when they are perceived as directly negative or unproductive.
