How does a lively public space influence social interaction in Malmö, Sweden?
Through a qualitative single case study of Möllevångstorget in Malmö, and direct observation,
the life and activities in Möllevångstorget and their connection with social interaction were
analyzed. The findings show a positive relationship between liveliness and social interaction.
When Möllevångstorget is lively, the number of people and the length of stay increase which
increases social interaction. Moreover, the study shows that the liveliness of the square and
thereby social interaction increase with the diversity of activities, good weather and high
physical quality of public space. However, some shortcomings in the physical quality have also
been highlighted, which should be addressed to increase liveliness and contribute to greater
social interaction in Möllevångstorget, Malmö. (Less)
