The study examines the case of the co-building group Röda Oasen in Malmö and the case of Egnahemsfabriken on Tjörn. The study is based on a theoretical framework of social sustainability where perspectives of diversity and participation are used as indicators of social sustainability. By analyzing official documents from the case study subjects and five interviews with stakeholders shows that both cases show high levels of participations, which could enable them to be used as means to social sustainable housing. This applied to socio-demographic diversity, mixed uses and mixed building types as well. What speaks against co-building groups and self-build housing is the lack of ethnic and socio-economic diversity presumably caused by shortage of economic capital and the lacking will to devote oneself to lengthy building processes.
