- Abstract
- Since the 15th-century Fugleflugtslinjen (the Bird Escape line) - transport corridor from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean - has been a long-lasting project and optimizations are still taking place today. As one of the optimization projects, in 2011, it was decided to build an immersed tunnel (Femern tunnel) between Rødbyhavn (Denmark) and Puttgarden (Germany), and in 2020 the construction works had started. This means less travel time across the sea - increasing the flow of people through countries and their cities.

While the population has been growing in Denmark since the 1980s, there are two parts of the country where the population has kept declining and one of them is Lolland-Falster - the municipality of Rødbyhavn.
Since the year 1800, urbanization has been rising greatly promoting local government reform, the relocation of public institutions, and many local and regional company closures.
These closures and relocations have caused unemployment and economic stagnation in the region. It has led to Lolland being one of those municipalities with the largest net outflow of employees and the largest net inflow of non-employees.
This project is aiming to investigate how the potential of this global infrastructure optimization project could help tackle the urbanization consequences in Rødbyhavn and what qualities it can bring to the town and its local people.
Working with time and being aware and sensitive to the dynamics of changing town components. Creating a vibrant and attractive place for the locals and newcomers to live, enjoy, and stay! (Less)
