The result shows that having relatives, acquaintances or a role model in a rural rescue service is a significant factor for recruitment. Factors that can be direct barriers to recruitment are the requirements of age and a permanent residence with a close distance to the rural rescue service. Furthermore, young children in the family can be a direct barrier to participating in the rescue service. Finally, to promote sustainable recruitment and retention, improvements of equipment, drills, requirements, and clear routines are suggested. (Less)
