- Abstract
- With reach far beyond the borders of one's own country, manipulative information
influence can be used to threaten international security.
Still, despite this threat, both researchers and practitioners are puzzled by how information influence is conducted. This study aims to contribute to this puzzle solving by, using China as empirical base, analyzing the procedure of one known case of information influence; the Chinese tourist incident in Stockholm, September 2018. By combining narrative theory and analysis with the framework of Organized Persuasive Communication by Bakir et al.(2018), this study analyses the procedure of manipulative information influence in articles describing this incident in English-language Chinese state media.

The study finds that the framework of Organized Persuasive Communication is useful in describing the procedure of information influence - even more so if the framework is combined with narrative theory and analysis. The study concludes that, in this case, specific categories from the framework of Organized Persuasive Communication is related to specific components of a narrative. Deception is commonly found in the narrative components of ”Actor”, ”Environment” and ”Conflict”, while Coercion, Incentivization and the most manipulative form of information influence - Deceptive Coercion - is commonly found in the narrative component ”Resolution”. Further, the study proposes a new category of Organized Persuasive Communication to be added to the framework; Deceptive Incentivization, which can be described as incentivization with deceptive premises.
