Abstract
The study examines how ensemble teachers in high school interpret the concept of participation and how they apply it in their teaching. Through interviews with three music teachers in ensemble at three different high schools, observations of the music teachers´ lessons, and literature studies, we have investigated how ensemble teachers interpret the concept of participation in relation to their teaching, as well as how their work affects the conditions for participation, how ensemble teachers can work to promote student participation, and what challenges there are for ensemble teachers in promoting participation in teaching. The study examines how ensemble teachers in high school interpret the concept of participation and how they apply it in their teaching. Through interviews with three music teachers in ensemble at three different high schools, observations of the music teachers´ lessons, and literature studies, we have investigated how ensemble teachers interpret the concept of participation in relation to their teaching, as well as how their work affects the conditions for participation, how ensemble teachers can work to promote student participation, and what challenges there are for ensemble teachers in promoting participation in teaching. Results show that both the interpretation of the concept and methods for working with participation differ, but that all informants share the view that it is a central aspect for successful ensemble teaching. Some important aspects of participation that the teachers highlight and we have observed during our research include student influence regarding repertoire, creating meaningful tasks for all ensemble members, and leading by example and inspiring participation. The research also points towards the significance of working with relationships in ensemble groups and how consciously focusing on relationships can promote conditions for student participation in ensemble teaching. Studien undersöker hur ensemblelärare på gymnasiet tolkar begreppet delaktighet och hur de tillämpar det i sin undervisning. Genom intervjuer med tre musiklärare i ensemble på tre olika gymnasieskolor, observationer på musiklärarnas lektioner samt litteraturstudier har vi studerat hur ensemblelärare tolkar begreppet delaktighet i förhållande till sin undervisning samt hur deras arbete påverkar förutsättningarna för delaktighet, hur ensemblelärare kan arbeta för att främja elevdelaktighet samt vilka utmaningar det finns för ensemblelärare att främja delaktighet i undervisningen. Studien undersöker hur ensemblelärare på gymnasiet tolkar begreppet delaktighet och hur de tillämpar det i sin undervisning. Genom intervjuer med tre musiklärare i ensemble på tre olika gymnasieskolor, observationer på musiklärarnas lektioner samt litteraturstudier har vi studerat hur ensemblelärare tolkar begreppet delaktighet i förhållande till sin undervisning samt hur deras arbete påverkar förutsättningarna för delaktighet, hur ensemblelärare kan arbeta för att främja elevdelaktighet samt vilka utmaningar det finns för ensemblelärare att främja delaktighet i undervisningen. Resultat visar att både tolkning av begreppet samt metoder för att arbeta med delaktighet skiljer sig men att samtliga informanter delar bilden av att det är en central aspekt för lyckad ensembleundervisning. Några viktiga aspekter av delaktighet som lärarna lyfter och vi sett under vår studie är elevinflytande, skapa meningsfulla uppgifter för alla ensemblemedlemmar samt leda med exempel och inspirera till delaktighet. Studien pekar även på vikten av att arbeta med relationer i ensemblegrupper och hur medvetet arbete med relationer i fokus kan främja förutsättningar för elevdelaktighet i ensembleundervisning.
