Synthesis of a PCyP and a PCP Pincer Ligand and Their Subsequent Cyclopalladations

- Abstract
- Cyclometallation reactions and pincer complexes are both essential in organometallic synthesis
and catalysis. The C-H bond activation is a key step in cyclometallation and metallacycles such aspincer complexes can thus be used to study this bond activation event. Much research has been
conducted on the PCsp2P pincer complexes and their cyclopalladations, but not as much on their
analogous sp3-hybridized counterparts. In this study, a PCyP and a PCP pincer ligand was
synthesized and their subsequent cyclopalladations were investigated through NMR studies. The synthesis of the PCyP pincer ligand was improved, with an unsuccessful attempt to find a substitute for a pyrophoric reactant. The cyclopalladation was studied through 31P NMR... The synthesis of the PCyP pincer ligand was improved, with an unsuccessful attempt to find a substitute for a pyrophoric reactant. The cyclopalladation was studied through 31P NMR spectra, which show a low yield of the cyclopalladated complex at RT and an increased yield upon heating. The cyclopalladation of the PCP pincer ligand was also studied through 31P NMR spectra, where it was found that the yield of the cyclopalladated complex increased from 30% to
approximately 70% over 25 h, but the ligand peak disappeared immediately, which leaves some
starting material unaccounted for. Proton exchange spectroscopy (1H EXSY), rotating-frame
spectroscopy (ROESY), and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) was utilized to further
investigate this, and it was found that several oligomeric species had formed, including some with exchange processes occurring. The fast relaxation of the oligomeric species, and possibly the presence of exchange, can through peak broadening explain the unaccounted-for starting material. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
