Exploring the Role of Music, Motivation, and Emotion Regulation in Problem-Solving Behavior
(2025) PSYP01 20231Department of Psychology
- Abstract
- The circumstances and constraints under which a problem is solved can affect how people engage in problem solving. Based on that premise this research investigates the effects of motivational music in the context of a dynamic ball-transportation task. In particular, this study explores how music influences distance moved, throwing accuracy, non-linearity, motivation and emotion regulation. 15 participants were divided into two groups, 8 exposed to motivational music and 7 who performed the task in silence, with their behaviors analyzed using the Cusp Catastrophe Model. Results show that participants exposed to motivational music tended to throw from longer distances but were less accurate. A exploratory analysis of possible interaction... (More)

Results show that participants exposed to motivational music tended to throw from longer distances but were less accurate. A exploratory analysis of possible interaction effects between music, performance and motivation or emotion regulation was also performed. However, the small sample size and convenience sampling means that the results should be interpreted cautiously. Future research should look into interaction effects and consider social facilitation effects. (Less)
