Realistic Dreaming: Navigating Creativity in the Unknown

Christensson, Elvira LU and Sjögren, Ebba LU (2025) BUSN49 20251
Department of Business Administration
Abstract
This thesis explores how creative professionals in a global automotive company's advanced design department navigate the creative process when designing for uncertain long-term futures. Through ten semi-structured interviews and an interpretive, qualitative approach, the study investigates how meaning is constructed and ideas are developed in contexts lacking clear problems, timelines, or evaluation criteria. The concept of "realistic dreaming" emerges as a mindset that embraces paradoxes and uncertainty to foster innovation in future-oriented design.
